Help Wanted: Desiderata Series
There is one piece of writing that comes very close to summarizing my philosophy of life: Desiderata by Max Ehrmann. I can fully embrace all of the advice offered by this beautiful piece, and it has long been one of my favorites.
As such, I intend to explore Desiderata throughout the month of October here on this blog with a series of posts. However, I would like very much to have some guest writers help me with this project so that we can get a variety of viewpoints on this beautiful piece.
Would you look over the Desiderata below and see if there is a section you’d be interested in writing about? If there is, post a comment “claiming” your section by referring to the corresponding number of your section. Then, in order to help generate some interest in this project, please leave a link to this post on your own blog. I will then be in touch with you via email with more details about the project and how we can proceed. Thank you very much!

About This Blog

In Thornton Wilder’s play Our Town, the central character dies an early death. Emily is given the chance to revisit a day of her life and is advised by those in the afterlife to pick an ordinary day, warning her that she might be overcome otherwise. Still, Emily is overwhelmed with emotion as she recognizes how wonderful the everyday details of her existence were. Her daily routine takes on new significance now that it is gone. Through her tears, she asks:
Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it– every, every minute?
With this blog, I am trying to fully “realize” my life by documenting the things that I love. I want to appreciate and examine my past and present, as well as plan actively for the future.
I hope to accentuate the positive in my life and in the world around me, with the hope that by focusing on the positive, I will draw more positive elements into my life. Or, at least, realize all of the blessings that I do have.
Bob, the author of this blog, is a 33 year old husband, father, son, teacher, Christian, and liberal.

I’m claiming #20 for myself.
Great idea! I’m in for #6. No promises on only 500 words, but I’ll do my best.
I would like #10 Be yourself
Number 3, speak the truth and listen to everyone, seems to speak the most to me.
I could take #17, Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself, for Cheerful Monk. I only post once a week on each of my blogs, so please give me enough time.
Jean Browman
Cheerful Monk
Transforming Stress Into Personal Power
I am confused between 22 and 24. First choice 22.
I’d like number 19, please, it really sings to me!
Carol L. Skolnick
Clear Life Solutions
Transformational Inquiry with The Work of Byron Katie
Could I change mine? I like 17, but #18 (child of the universe) had a profound impact on me when I was younger.
Jean Browman
Cheerful Monk
Bob, thanks for visiting my site and for inviting us to write on this great piece. I’d like to write on #1.
Count me in for #24. I have posted quite a few articles on my site in regards to happiness. This will give me a chance to combine them. Once completed, I will post it and link to your site. And, of course you will also post it. I kind of like this idea of yours.
Suggestion…..once all posts are complete, every blogger who participated should post a list of the final posts (name only) and a link to the sites that wrote them.
I would like to claim #4. This fits very well with my regular features of Straight Talk Tuesday and Free Therapy Thursday.
I’d like #5 please. I write a lot about this in my How Do I Love Me? Let Me Count the Ways book.
Thanks for inviting me!
hi there bob…..
i would like to claim #17….how fun….just let me know the particulars and i will participate….great idea!!!!
darlene
What a lovely and ingenious project!
I’ll take #7. I have many obligations for the next month, so as the Monk said, pleeeeeeeeze go easy on me!
Great idea!
I’ll take #21. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
Hmm…. Can I do #16?
This is pure genius.
I’d like to tackle #2: As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Hi
I did a post on Desiderata a while back.I love that poem a lot.Esp the part about how there will always be someone, in life, above you or below you
I like the suggestion that Powerkis made, for each of us participating to share the list of posts on our own blogs once the entire series is through… That way, those of us who are at the front of the list (like me at #3) can send our own audiences back to the completed series to help out those who are at the end of the list… Everybody gets to show their work off to everybody else’s readers.
Sounds fair, right?
Hey Bob,
I’d like to tackle #9. Love the poem.
14 sounds good to me! Cheers, GD @ Modern-Worker.com
I want #13-Take kindly the counsel of the years
(this has been my favorite poem since 5th grade! Now I even have it framed with VanGoph in the background hanging in my bathroom!)
Oops as I look back up there someone else already had a name on it but it wasn’t crossed out,
I could go with #12, I’m feeling some inspiration there!
Absolutely I want #12!

I claim #11
This strikes me as a great idea. After all, as people evolve, they see things differently than they did before. In fact, life is all about reviewing our thoughts and teaching ourselves to remember key issues we’ve forgotten.
Hi Bob, What a great project! Sorry I missed out…maybe next time. I’m looking forward to seeing how it evolves! I’m sure it will be fabulous…every minute : )
Bob,
I believe that your time frame for completion was 10/26/07? What I plan to do on that day is to post my article on my site, letting you know that I have done so. Then you would come over and copy/paste it into your master post. Please let me know if that works for you.
I have really enjoyed writing it. It is complete except for a few last minute edits.
I am looking forward to seeing the completed project.
